Buy the game off steam. Wait patiently for it download.

Upon downloading, I attempt to run it. Securom says it doesn't reconigze my computers bios. Says I need to update it. Google tells me this is dangerous if I do it wrong, my machine won't boot.

Spend the next half hour trying to find a way around Securom shit. Nothing works. I'm resigned to updating the bios.

Thats a good 45 minutes of finding out how, then finding out who exactly made the motherboard, and then taking a huge risk when I update the bios from the manufacture website cause nothing is clearly explained on there. Launch game, game pops up, asks me to sign into my Rockstar Social club account. I don't know my password.

I do the BS to get my password reset. Attempt to login fails. Google fu again. Okay apparently theres this game client I need to download, because Games For WIndows Live doesn't exist anymore. Now I need to reset my microsoft password.

Boot game up, offline mode initially. Now at least it's running. But the specs are wrong, and it's not letting me change anything.sigh. go online again, find out theres a glitch that my card is too powerful and I gotta do this thing at the end of the program shortcut for it to run. Whatever, I do it.

Got everything running on max settings now. Going good right? Have to go through more windows live bullshit. It updates itself and then tells me to reboot the game. NOW finally, everything worked.

That was a good 3 hours trying to get a game to work that on the Xbox 360, you could basically just pop in and play. The only thing that makes this worth it? I quickly download and install a mode for First Person mode.:D But jesus christ, they go on and one about their damn frames per second, but the hell good is that if every game you want to play is a gamble of will it actually run? EDIT: I'm starting to come around. Just wasted another good chunk of time installing mods to make the game look like something released in the past 3 years, so it's all nice and pretty now and hopefully ready to play. The game looks utterly fantastic now, so maybe.

I'm changing my opinion a bit:P. GTAIV is a notoriously bad PC port, even once you get past the DRM schemes.

(Also, welcome to 2008, heyday of Games For Windows Live and DRM that treats you like a criminal.) There are a selection of titles from 2007-2009 which have stuff like that going on. You would have probably been better off downloading a crack for the game instead of flashing your BIOS. (But hey, atleast you'll never have to do that again on your current mobo.) The fun part about GTAIV on PC is, that no matter your hardware the game will run like absolute garbage for no reason.

At one moment you'll have like 100 frames and then suddenly the thing drops down to 40 or lower, 'cus why not. GTAV, a game that looks better and is more demanding, runs significantly better on equivalent hardware, not to mention scales better with lower hardware.

I'd advise giving GTAV a spin if you want a mostly painless experience with a good PC port. The sad thing about GTAIV is that, even though the PC version is a pain in the ass, it's still the best way to play it, since the game aged pretty poorly on the old 360. Holy hell, does it run like garbage, and not like 'ew 30 fps is unplayable' garbage, but 'every time you go moderately fast in a car the game runs at around 15-20 frames and the motion blur goes insane' garbage. How I was able to play it like that when I was younger without feeling nauseous, I have no idea.

Good news is that the wast majority of the games don't have problems like GTAIV does. Most games don't even need tinkering outside of the main game, though I would advise getting used to the occasional tinkering. Also, PCGamingWiki is a good site to be aware of, if you ever wish to look up whether a port is good or not and what are the more common issues.

If it makes you feel better, I stumbled dick first into the beehive known as GTAIV when I bought my first gaming rig some years ago. It was quite the learning experience.

Just do yourself a favour and don't go for the Saint's Row 2 double combo. Ya know on consoles, one doesn't have to worry about if they're buying a broken game or not? It's a fantastic thing Sadly, that stopped being true midway through last gen, though for different reasons compared to the current one. What I'm taking issue with is your generalizing PC gaming as a gamble based on one bad experience. PC gaming generally is a gamble. It's just that most of us have been burned so many times by poorly optimized ports, restrictive DRMs, and various technical issues that we tend to look out for this stuff.

It significantly reduces the number of times we're actually gambling anymore. That said, the PC gaming scene seems to be getting better. There's no more GFWL, and SecuROM seems to have mostly gone away. Steam, Origin, and GOG are all good places to get games from, so our major issue anymore in that regard is Ubisoft and UPlay. And it almost never takes long before a poorly optimized, bug-ridden port gets called out.

Heck, you can still buy the good games on launch given how fast that gets out. So I would say things are less of a gamble now than they were 5-10 years ago.

    Working.

However, given that The Witcher 3 had numerous reports of running poorly on AMD graphics cards (compared to NVIDIA at least), there's still some level of gambling going on, even from companies that have otherwise great reputations. Ya know on consoles, one doesn't have to worry about if they're buying a broken game or not? It's a fantastic thing Then stick to consoles. That's the beautiful thing, there are gaming options for everyone.

Want something that 'just works?' You have your Xboxes and your PlayStations. Want something that's high end?

Got your PCs. Want something that's walled off and infantilising? There's Nintendo and Apple.

And, I mean, part of the reason PC games aren't going to get better is they still sell. People will spend way more than three hours on a game that they probably spent way more money on than you did for GTA IV (which I'm guessing was not full retail) and then complain and.buy the next game anyway. That's why PC games still have uPlay and Origin and Securom and all those other things we absolutely despise. Far as the basic stuff goes, I'm fine with elbow work for PC gaming. I work on computers for funsies and for profit. If it's a problem for you, though, there's always consoles. Buy the game off steam.

Wait patiently for it download. Upon downloading, I attempt to run it. Securom says it doesn't reconigze my computers bios. Says I need to update it. Thats a good 45 minutes of finding out how, then finding out who exactly made the motherboard, and then taking a huge risk when I update the bios from the manufacture website cause nothing is clearly explained on there. Right. It's everyone else fault that you cannot even keep the most basic of firmware up-to-date.It moronic not keeping the BIOS/UEFI updated which you should expect if the motherboard model is less that 5 years old. Launch game, game pops up, asks me to sign into my Rockstar Social club account. I don't know my password.

I do the BS to get my password reset. There was a patch that made Rockstar Social club optional. You can always press the off-line button when it comes up. Google fu again. Okay apparently theres this game client I need to download, because Games For WIndows Live doesn't exist anymore.

Now I need to reset my microsoft password.Nope. Have to go through more windows live bullshit.

It updates itself and then tells me to reboot the game. Yep went thought that. Wasn't too much hassle.

Find out theres a glitch that my card is too powerful and I gotta do this thing at the end of the program shortcut for it to run. It's because you have more than 2GB of VRAM Not too sure if this is Console propaganda. Buy the game off steam. Wait patiently for it download.

Playing offline wasn't working. There was no patch I saw to remove windows live. I spent a good chunk of time trying to avoid touching the bios.

Which by the way, basic? I go to the manufacture's website, all it gives me are two different links with NO CLEAR indication what exact motherboard they are for, brah. It's a fantastic thing Sadly, that stopped being true midway through last gen, though for different reasons compared to the current one.Saints Row 2 was two dollars. Actually so far? Knock on wood, it's running pretty solid at 60 FPS. So heres hoping I don't have those issues, cause I'm quite enjoying getting another First Person GTA experience.

Yeah, for all the shit consoles get, at least you can rely on them to run a game you buy for it I woke up this morning, Windows Updates had killed my PC. Did something to the OS so it was only as valuable as a paperweight. Luckily I had my tablet, and I managed to find a fix that required me to go into BIOS and all that jazz. Don't remember getting that shit on my 360. However, having a PC is just too convenient to give up on.

One thing I HAVE given up on when it comes to PC gaming, though, is anything to do with Uplay, since quite simply in my experience, it may as well be called 'Udon'tplay'. It's like being scammed out of money, but entirely legal on their part. Also, yeah, GFWL is cancer.

Was playing Dead Rising 2 earlier today, thank fuck they removed that crap from it, I actually managed to play with a friend. Right. It's everyone else fault that you cannot even keep the most basic of firmware up-to-date.It moronic not keeping the BIOS/UEFI updated which you should expect if the motherboard model is less that 5 years old. Flashing your BIOS is actually a risky procedure, and can brick your motherboard if you do it incorrectly or suffer a power failure while it's happening. As such, you generally shouldn't bother with BIOS updates unless it will fix a specific problem you are having, or you need a newer version to support a piece of hardware you are looking to add.

Some newer boards will have two BIOS chips to ameliorate the risk, but it is still something you shouldn't really be doing on a regular basis. The PC is brand fucking new. Lol So you expected it to be all updated? Hehe, I hope you like your first desktop. Kinda proves my point. Some 'Master Race' I've joined, eh?

Hey, ya know when the Xbox needs to be updated, I can actually click 'Check for updates' and it will actually update itself if theres an update. I don't have to find out by a program, then have my care center lie to me and tell me all the drivers are up to date, and then red pill/blue pill which BIOS is the one that wont brick my expensive toy. And yes, Jimmies have been rustled sir! You have disrupted my inner harmony!

Good day sir!:P. NOW finally, everything worked. That was a good 3 hours trying to get a game to work that on the Xbox 360, you could basically just pop in and play. The PC is brand fucking new. I understand that it can be tedious and very annoying to get a game to run on a pc, but if you play regulary on pc, you tend to learn to deal with basic problems. I have a small issue with your comparison of pc to console at this point and I have to write that now to make pc look better. Comparing the hassle to run an old game on a brand new pc to running the game on an old console, feels at least to me wrong.

Winebottler Not Working. Help Needed. Jimmies Rustled. : Steamboat

Some of the issues came from the lack of compatibility of the new hardware with the old game. Had you used an old pc from around the time, the problems with your graphics card and your mainboard probably wouldn't happen.

Of course it's easier to just use old hardware, it certainly won't cause compatibility issues. A better comparision would be trying to run the game on a new pc and a current gen console or on an old pc and an old console. Sadly, I don't have an excuse to make pc look better concerning your issues with drm. Don't let the issues you had with that one game discourage you from playing pc, if it's maintained properly you won't have many issues with current games. Ya know on consoles, one doesn't have to worry about if they're buying a broken game or not? It's a fantastic thing Ah, but unlike on a console, if there IS something broken with the game you can usually figure out some way to fix it.

On a broken console game you're pretty much dependent on the developers to support and fix the game. I understand where you're coming from though. Even though I've been a PC Gamer for 20+ years I still find it rather tedious at times trying to fix, optimize, and/or configure things to work properly (both for games and other computing situations). Fortunately, in a fair majority of cases there is some feasible way to correct or work around an issue, usually it's just a problem of finding out how, tools available, and how available information on the problem might be. Buy the game off steam.

Wait patiently for it download. Upon downloading, I attempt to run it.

Securom says it doesn't reconigze my computers bios. There's the problem right there.

Rockstar were/are assholes and used Securom.

NOW finally, everything worked. That was a good 3 hours trying to get a game to work that on the Xbox 360, you could basically just pop in and play. This is why I am never buying GTA IV on PC. Also installing the 360 version to storage is a good idea so add about ten minutes to the pop-in time.

But jesus christ, they go on and one about their damn frames per second, but the hell good is that if every game you want to play is a gamble of will it actually run? GTA IV is an anomaly. Expect future hell for games that used GFWL and Securom. Ya know on consoles, one doesn't have to worry about if they're buying a broken game or not? It's a fantastic thing You've never played Mercs 2 I take it? Kinda proves my point.

Some 'Master Race' I've joined, eh? Same thing happens on consoles since the last gen, really. Hey, ya know when the Xbox needs to be updated, I can actually click 'Check for updates' and it will actually update itself if theres an update. Wait, they stopped doing the automatic bootup updates and offer manual? On the One I assume? I don't have to find out by a program, then have my care center lie to me and tell me all the drivers are up to date, and then red pill/blue pill which BIOS is the one that wont brick my expensive toy. But that's the thrill!

Winebottler not working. help needed. jimmies rustled. : steamboat springs

Ahahahahaha nope. When everything glitches out on a console, there's no way to fix it. And I have a higher glitch-out rate on console vs computer. I'll add that on a PC, you can also replace hardware at will. The PC is brand fucking new. Lol So you expected it to be all updated?

Hehe, I hope you like your first desktop. This post exemplifies why most people don't give two turds about PC gaming and stick with consoles, and why console gaming is going to be around for the foreseeable future. Even with consoles needing updates, it is instant and easy to install and not a giant pain in the ass that takes freaking forever with the chance of bricking the system.

You are also guaranteed to put in the game, and know for sure that it is going to work 100% of the time, without having to worry about whatever graphics card or whatever you need to run whatever game. PC gaming may have all the flash and pomp, but, I really don't care enough about that to waste time and money on a gaming PC to make sure everything works properly.:/. Ah, your problem is that you wanted to play GTA4 on PC. This is widely considered a bad idea, since the PC version of GTA4 is a pile of excrement rife with technical issues and some of the worst issues plagueing PC gaming, like the annoying as all hell DRM and obnoxious logging into various gaming services. GTA4 is by no means indicative of PC gaming as a whole. Ya know on consoles, one doesn't have to worry about if they're buying a broken game or not? It's a fantastic thing Except when it does break on comsole there's jack shit you can do about it except hope some benevolent developer patches it.

Plus didn't gta4 use GFWL? That service was fucking horrible. It's really an anomaly. Plus since you just bought your PC there's usually some updates you need to run. The PC is brand fucking new.

I just get annoyed with the obnoxious PC Elitists that talk down to everyone for really no reason at all. They are worse than the dumb console fanboys that argue which one is better.:/. They are worse than the dumb console fanboys that argue which one is better.:/ Yeah I heard that usually two wrongs make a right. I know Grand Theft Auto IV is supposed to be a bad port, and that shows with the problems you had here, but.

It always ran fine for me, even on my old computer. Same here, the only hassle I ever had with it was related to GFWL, though it wasn't that bad. I've been a PC gamer since about 1989, and building PC's since then as well (sure I was only 9 at the time but my father taught me how to do it since it was his job).

The differences between PC and console gaming essentially have not changed. PC gaming has almost always required a bit more involved knowledge in how one's system runs and how to troubleshoot issues should they arise. Its nothing new. Its much much easier today than it was nearly 30 years ago when I started, but the essentials are the same. Instead of the console holding your hand, you're required to know the specs of your machine and whether or not it can run a game and if it can but is having issues, there's a wealth of knowledge out there in many forms from people who've already experienced the same issues. Should devs/publishers do more to keep their games up to date, especially since they're selling them still? However its still a smart idea to learn all you can about your PC.

Because you have the ability to maintain the machine yourself, and are somewhat expected to do so. The OS is much more handholding than they used to be, but there's still an amount of user-side responsibility when it comes to maintenance and troubleshooting. So take this as a lesson in learning the fundamentals of owning a PC. Eventually stuff like this will be a nuisance, yes, but you'll also be armed with knowledge to lessen said nuisance considerably and maybe just maybe be able to fix a lot of problems yourself. I credit PC gaming with providing me the knowledge to become a PC tech, beyond what I learned from my father, by way of having to troubleshoot issues with software, OS and hardware alike. I don't think everyone needs to learn to be a PC tech, but the avenue is there.

Winebottler Not Working. Help Needed. Jimmies Rustled. : Steamer

I played the game on the PS3 first, then bought a PC copy via Steam and tried it for a few minutes just to see if it works. It doesn't work well, but it works.

In this day and age, your experience is fortunately not representative. GTAIV had a terrible port in the days when companies were crapping out terrible ports one after another. GTAIV had bad optimization, allegedly bad controls and even now, performance will not be stable and steady even on high-end PCs. Also, Rockstar very shamefully has apparently yet to remove GFWL (when Bethesda, WB/Rocksteady & others have), even though the thing is now defunct. If you want to truly have fun with a bad port, try the competition; buy Saints Row 2 for the PC, then be seriously tempted to sell your brand new PC to buy a console, any console, even if it's a Wii-U. All I can tell you is that your experience isn't common with ports past 2011 or around that time- with rare exceptions, of course (e.g.

Arkham Knight). So, at the very least, your new system should keep you entertained in the future. It's a fantastic thing That's a lie.

Off the top of my head, Superman 64, Ride to Hell, the PS3 version of Bayonetta 1, the Wii U version of Rodina, the Sky Soldier, Sonic Boom, Sonic 06, and the last gen versions of Shadow of Mordor and likely any game on both generations of consoles as well. Skyrim on PS3 had some pretty crippling lag issues for some users, and I think the Fallout games had similar weird issues like that too. At least on PC you can usually find a way to fix it yourself. On console you're just straight fucked unless they decide to patch it. All that to get your cousin, gun dealer and girlfriend constantly nagging you to take them bowling. Also, having your DRM require flashing your BIOS is beyond the pale.

I was annoyed enough that The Suffering: Ties that Bind made me download an update to the DRM's own driver in order to run on my laptop, back in the day. Especially given the often harsh return policies on software, I'm waiting for the day someone lodges a lawsuit against a company when their computer met the listed requirements and the software still refused to run.
